Blood and Sun is a newly unveiled collaboration featuring Tanner Anderson (Obsequaie/Celestiial), Luke Tromiczak (Maledicere), and Erik Wivinus (Thunderbolt Pagoda): three native Minnesotans with strident heathen beliefs, common backgrounds breeding uncommon art. Blood and Sun’s music can be described as a mixture of neo-folk, ambient and heathen folk.
The band’s latest album “White Storms Fall” has been recently released and the tranquility of this album is what captivated me from the beginning. The first song “Hewn” starts with a thumping/drumming kind-of sound and this surely will make the listener wonder more about the album. Generally, I really liked the arrangement of the instruments throughout the album; especially the magic of the instruments -violin and cello -in “Veiled Lady” or “Keen” will be quite satisfying for people who are searching for calmness and want to feel connected to the nature. Furthermore, with each song, the listener will experience different feelings and the atmosphere that the instruments create. The album is also smooth to listen to; it doesn’t bore the listener with long tracks. As a matter of fact, the short songs in – between provide just the right amount of dose and transition to build that curiosity in the listener.
On the contrary, I must mention that I felt that the vocals lacked the feeling in the album; the instruments in the songs have a lot of potential and the power but the vocals lacked that excitement to complete that magical atmosphere of the album.
“White Storms Fall” is the perfect album if you want to discover the beauty of the nature and listen to a soothing record. However, if you are into folk metal or atmospheric music, this album might not be for you. It’s not atmospheric or too ambient but it surely delivers some interesting songs in its own genre.
