Cloak of Altering is a project by Mories. He started it as Ophiuchus in the mid-nineties, and then it evolved into Cloak of Altering in 2011 according himself. While earlier this year we got to review some of his other projects Cloak of Altering is coming with a new album called “Plague Beasts”.
How to describe this new album of Cloak of Altering is maybe not the most straightforward way to do so, but when listening the album carefully you come to the idea that what they have done is simply decomposing a genre. Some Grind core release completely stripped, abused its structure into a whole new direction. Made it a bit slower, mixed it with effects and drama to make it sound like an album you more likely expect from Mories. Electronic as it is now, you may still find those elements deep within. Whether that was quite the intention in the first place is probably not the case, but it was the first thing that came to notice while listening the release and the thoughts never left by any next turn of listening. But it would be a bit superficial to stick with that and it is not only that Grind you hear becoming transformed. Maybe some melodic riffs you could expect by the main names in Melodic Death are getting a metamorphosis towards Cloak of Altering style.
“Plague Beasts” is an album that could be discussed much longer. There is simply so much about this release that comes up and perhaps it is a bit surprising and open one from what the expectations were on forehand. It is a skilful exhibition of playfulness that will amaze many, dig into this experience and be aroused by its richness of sounds
