German goth-metal veterans End of Green has just released a compilation of their debut “Infinity” of 1996 and their re-recorded versions from 2024. Their latest release was 7 years ago with “Void Estate”. These guys have been in the scene for like 30 years now. Just wow! I couldn’t have discovered this band if it wasn’t for my avid goth metalhead friend for 15 years. I just have to thank her for that. When EoG came to the scene with their debut record, some people had a hard time defining their genre. I guess in the last 90s, genres were more clear-cut and well-defined. To me, this means the band is much more than the assigned genres, however they called themselves “depressed Subcore” in the past when they had to define themselves. It sounds very dark-humored just as T0N were doing just that back at the time. Type 0 was the band’s inspiration as well as the more sludgey-stoner rock bands like Kyuss.

The re-recorded versions are surely more polished than the debut’s tracks which is a good thing. At least to my ears. For instance, I can hear Michelle Darkness’ vocals are more refined and tormented in the re-records. He has been an icon to very marginal euro-goth rock/metal fans, I had no idea of that when I started listening to them around 10 years ago. This release is the proof of their success as musicians who have survived for the last 30 years despite the dark times as human species has to go through.

In the original recordings, the band does not sound so ripe, even careless and quite alternative in their own words “with no pretense“. Still, this debut is the one that kept them going and brought success for all these years that the re-recording makes so much sense. I must say the re-recording goes hard!

End of Green celebrated their 30-year history with a home show in Stuttgart in 2022 and have hinted at 30 new songs already written by Darkness himself. If and when you have the chance to catch them live in Germany or neighboring countries, do not miss it!
