Volucrine – The Clockwork Tyrant

Releasedate: 2014
By: Sabine van Gameren

Volucrine is a Melodic Death Metal band from Kouvola, Finland. The band is quite young as they have formed this year under this name. Before they have been around as V but they decided to change name. This year they come with the first release under this name, “The Clockwork Tyrant” is out now.

What is interesting about Volucrine comes forward within second after you start listening. It is basically everything you did not expect. The band has compositions that surprise you even though you may recognize something in it. Yet they twist it around just a little bit. And that is actually to be found on all fronts. Clean vocals are bringing you a sound you would not have expected. Would I mention a reference then perhaps you could listen to Suburban Tribe.
Next to it you are presented with great melodic pieces. They switch it with a constructive heaviness to come to a quite diverse sound.

Quite a surprising release, it pays off to listen to it several times and let it grow on you, for the band steps away from the standards a bit and therefore you will discover some new parts to give your attention each time you listen. It is an exciting release that has much to like, but if we have to mention just a little remark it is that the songs are not always sticking in mind that easily. In the EP there is not one song that jumps out in such a way that it could be that song that defines them. Perhaps it takes a full length to bring that one alive. For now the EP will keep us busy until it is there.
