The Finnish band Underjord is a fairly new formation. They make experimental Metal combined with Doom and Death influences and come with their debut album this year. It is called “Sheol” and is out now.
The band has quite an ambient atmosphere over their sound. Yet that ambient likes to haunt you up the creeps. The doomy sound makes it all quite creepy and dark which indicates that the album sucks you into a wild listening experience in only a short time of listening. Synths are driving the experience but do not rule out the rest of the band in creating this, it is quite a joint venture that makes you realize that without one of the elements being this present it may not be as strong as it is. A thin layer is left for experimenting on that clearly. But where the band has some space to grow into is into the diversity. Sometimes it becomes a bit too much alike and within one release that can end up being quite deadly.
Good, “Sheol” is the band’s debut. They simply have the time and space to grow and refine themselves much further. Knowing with what else the underground of Finland has to offer in this genre we may be sure they’ll find some inspiration and ideas on that soon.
