Vardan – Enjoy of Deep Sadness

Releasedate: 05-08-2014; Label: Moribound Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Vardan is a solo project of Italian grounds. Formed in 1997 he focused on Black Metal to bring out but it would take at least 10 years before a first full length album came out. After that it clearly tasted like more as now a total of 8 albums got out of which 6 of them saw light in the past two years.

Somewhat slow Black Metal that creeps onto your spine, cold and icey. Not always the fullest sound as you could imagine but with a solo project you don’t always need to fill everything up thickly. What comes to notice is that Vardan left a lot of space for the vocals which how dark and evil they may be, still are somewhat easy to hear. It is nice to hear this release, three long tracks but in a way it feels like you are missing something, perhaps the two albums earlier released this year are part of a trilogy and maybe the whole would come out a bit more complete than listening to a single release.
The strengths of this release are mostly found in the melodic parts. Those are driving the whole together. Maybe you could have hoped for more complexity, but the fact that he is teasing you with the slow progress in the story, the sounds and all is making you longing for the climax even more.

Vardan, a mean little teaser in Black Metal you could say. An enjoyable trip, but sometimes you may have hoped for a little more here and there.
