The German band Long Distance Calling is making post/progressive rock. They formed in 2006 and about ten years later they are up for release number six: “Trips”.

Long Distance Calling is a band that plays mainly instrumental. The band does have guests singing in their albums but never taking over from the band self. After the first round listening we were already blown away by “Lines” where Petter Carlsen is breaking the tradition. All for the good because he certainly adds great weight to the song. Emotional, passionate it comes from within and it addresses you.

But hey, there is so much more to find in this release, the band has a great feel for building songs, the tensions are there it is playful and a little bit teasing. They keep you with them by not dragging parts too long but keep all entertaining. Listen to “Momentum”, a song that takes almost six minutes but never bores you for a second. Guitars are often bringing such nice melodies that you could close your eyes and let yourself become part of it. A bit tougher is the closer “Flux” which takes far over twelve minutes, but even there you never feel lost.

Long Distance Calling has the great ability to keep people interested through the whole. Sure, not everyone may be into the vocals in some of the songs, but for those there are plenty instrumental ones to be found as well. The album as a whole showcases exactly what this band is good at and show that they keep on growing.
