Katacomb is a Finnish thrash metal band founded in 2010. After releasing a demo EP in 2011, they have released their debut album “Unrelenting Power” on October.
This is quite an interesting record. At first listen, you might say “oh well, just another thrash metal record” but I gotta tell you that I have still not gotten tired of the album even after listening to it for more than a few times. As a matter of fact, I was reading an interview of the band and the vocalist stated that the band is not trying to innovate but just making the music that they enjoy listening to. So in this sense, this record is indeed a ‘classic thrash metal’ record that we know but there’s something that attracts the listener and I think it’s exactly what the vocalist stated. The band is indeed doing this from the heart and you can feel that bombastic and aggressive energy in this album. This makes the album fast, thrashy, catchy (in a brutal way of course!) but also melodic!
Soundwise, all of the elements of the classic thrash metal sound are there; into-your-face thrash sound, brutal and fast riffs, fast beats and the aggressive vocals! The vocals have to be appreciated here; I just loved those moments where the vocalist goes full high-pitch! Just listen to “The Curse”and you will understand what I am talking about. Apart from that, a little bit of punk sound is also there, which is a nice aspect of the album. Overall, the album is fast so don’t expect emotional stuff! This is all about brutality!
“Unrelenting Power” is definitely recommended for fans of the old thrash metal sound. Considering that the band is quite young, I can say that they have potential and it would be interesting to see what they will be up to in the future.
