Kvltist is a black metal band from Germany. Formed in 2013, the band is young and their music is all about “expressing worship unto HIM who is the serpent and the greater knowledge of the final revelation unto earth and heaven ruined”. The band’s first full-length record “Catechesis” is out this month!

Judging from how they describe themselves, I kinda had mixed expectations from the record but I gotta say that it’s quite impressive considering that it’s the band’s debut album!  So what’s so interesting about it then?

From the beginning, the never-ending darkness accompanies the listener and that mystical occult atmosphere is surely captivating. This is not the melodic black metal but we see the more technical and the atmospheric side of the genre. Generally, the album is quite dynamic; I found the drumming quite impressive and I am sure the typical BM fans will like the drumming in this album. However, at certain moments, the album slows down and becomes more atmospheric and more occult. At that moment, I got to appreciate the riffs and the atmosphere behind the album.

Soundwise, I liked the fact that the sound is quite raw but well-produced. I can see that the band likes to be ‘direct’ as they want to show the listeners what their vision is. A highlight of the is definitely “Oblation”; it’s probably the most diverse song of the album with powerful vocals and a complex structure of the song. I also especially liked how the ending of the album (towards the end of the last song “Ite Ad Ignis”) leaves us with many questions and keep us wondering what the band will come up with in the future.

“Catechesis” is quite successful for a start. Surely, the band has a long way to go and you may even find it quite ‘confusing’ at the first listen. But with more spins, you will see that the band has a vision.
