Releasedate: 14-02-2014; Label: Valkyrie Rising
By: Sabine van Gameren
The Belgian formation Valkyre have been formed in 2004. The band played several gigs and ahad a few small releases but a full length never really came alive. It has been quiet around them for a while but since 2012 they are a bit more active and the line-up is refreshed. This year it is time for the release of their debut album “Our Glorious Demise”.
In 2013 the band came with a single but now with a full length in our hands we have some more to look at. As a reference we only have the memories of the early gigs the band had in their career in 2005, but since we are now looking at a pretty changed line up we are curious what to expect. The essence of this band is not too different of what you would expect of a female fronted formation. Some classical influences are giving the band some extra dimension and perhaps that is one of the elements they should embrace and find a way to bring live. The ambiance of that could come out very powerful, even more than what you would get from listening to the album. The instrumental part is all well thought off and gives you quite enough to set itself free from the stereotype. On the vocal side that effect is perhaps less. Although vocalist Claudia has a fine voice to listen to, she is not the strongest link of the band. Often dancing on the edge, but the fact that she dares to go there and find her limits is the way to expand and grow, so we are happy to find out how that may sound in future.
