Amberian Dawn – Re-Evolution

Releasedate: 16-06-2013; Label: KHY Suomen Musiikki Oy
By: Thorsten Hendriks

Finnish symphonic melodic metal ‘Amberian Dawn’ re-recorded some of their favourite tracks and compiled them on this album as introduction of their new singer Capri. In essence this is their 5th Album and their music has evolved over time, now bringing a new dimension with a fantastic female vocalist.

All songs on Re-EVOLUTION were carefully compiled from the following previous Amberian Dawn releases:
•River Of Tuoni (2008) by KHY Suomen Musiikki
•The Clouds of Northland Thunder (2009) by KHY Suomen Musiikki
•End of Eden (2010) by Spinefarm Records
•Circus Black (2012) by Spinefarm Records

Thw whole album is a seamlessly sewn combination of great songs; Capri’s voice is very strong and full of emotion accompanied by strong percussion and virtuously played guitars. Track one ‘Valkyries’ is a high tempo song in which all the bandmembers show their skills. The next tracks ‘Incubus’ and ‘Kokko – Eagle of Fire’ follow this trend but mixed with a little of electronic keyboards and makes it a very enjoyable song. ‘Kokko – Eagle of Fire’ is also the first track of this album to be released as a single. ‘Lilly of the Moon’ tells a story, very cleverly composed into a song where all the instruments and vocals compliment eachother and work flawlessly into a great track. ‘Come now Follow’ is a lot slower, almost a balled with strong drums and lashed with guitar riffs and licks. Track 6 ‘Crimson Flower’ has that typical symphonic feel to it what you would expect from a female fronted metal band. More orchestral and slower than the previous tracks, but nonetheless just as enjoyable.

‘Circus Black’ goes back to a more upbeat, speedy tempo. The guitarists and drummer must have had a great time on this track! Capri’s singing is melodic at times but very passionate and intimidating when the song requires her to reveal her true self. Track 8 ‘Lost Souls’ starts with a long-ish guitar into and then the vocals enter the arena together with percussion and it all forms to an extremely well composed and executed musical performance, which would sound absolutely fantastic live I would imagine. The next song ‘Cold Kiss’ starts with a very speedy intro, giving you the feeling it’s going to be a fast rocking song, then the female vocals kick in at a slower pace together with the male vocals. When the song really get going it’s almost like the vocals are battling and the tempo of the song varies. Again a very well written piece of music. The intro of ‘River of Tuoni’ reminded me a bit of ‘Dragonforce’ (I hope I haven’t offended anyone). Very high paced guitars and drums combined with Capri’s excellent classically trained operatic vocals this is a true showcase of the band musical capabilities. The final song of this great compilation CD is ‘Charnell’s Ball’, the whole band has turned the volume and tempo down and we have landed in a theatrical ballad, however the percussion and guitars have a great lead.

If you own any of the previous albums and enjoy Amberian Dawn’s music, Re-Evolution is a must buy!
