Shining – One One One

Releasedate: 07-06-2013; Label: Indie Recordings
By: Sabine van Gameren

The Norwegian band Shining made themselves famous with the release of the album “Blackjazz” and its live edition of that afterwards. The band created a whole new genre for themselves and toured well with it. Anno 2013 the band is coming with a brand new release called: “One One One”.

After releasing such successful albums it might be frightening to come up with new material. Exciting at the same time but it is always to wonder if the fans will love it as much as the previous one. And with “One One One” the band does not really have to worry too much. If you loved “Blackjazz” then this one will surely be of your likings. Good, maybe you listen to it an additional time, the album grows on you but it has the essentials that make Shining a success. It has the drama, it has the saxophone that Jurgen Munkeby is bringing in next to his weird lyrics that not always seem to make sense right away. “I Won’t Forget” is what he is shouting at you right at the beginning of the album, he won’t forget your name. The song is daring, challenging and a little flirty. There is “My Dying Drive” which sounds like a follow up of Fisheye, to finish what has been started. There is “Off The Hook” which is a little odd and the energetic “This Is How Your Story Ends”. An album full of tracks that could all be released as single. Perhaps that is why they are all relatively short. But then the album finishes with the ultimate single of this release “Paint The Sky Black” that has the evil catchiness all over it. It is that we don’t give marks to release, but otherwise this “One One One” would have gotten something very close to ten ten ten.
