Severe Mutilation – Spawn of Hatred

Severe Mutilation formed in 2008 under the name of Bloodspill, but a year later the line up was changed and Sever Mutilation got created. The band is based in Puerto Rico and comes now with the full length release “Spawn of Hatred” which is their second full length album.

A small intro leads you straight into the powerful sound of Death Metal that the guys are aiming for. With a huge list of bands that influenced them containing basically any band that made it in the genre, the guys do not really give a closed vision of their sound presented. To give a direction you mainly have to search for the American stereotype rather than the Scandinavian connection. The brutality is there, the band seem to have a clear vision of what they want to bring to their audience if you listen to the music, so no need to leave that all open in their description. Vocals are easily engaging you into it. When an occasional cleaner voice can be heard the band is even more hitting you, some more presence of that in combination with the brutality that is dominating now would easily target a wide audience.

It must be said that the guys seem to have more ambition to stay with a traditional sound though. The riffs, the drums… they could expand on what they are doing now. It is all done well, but so clean, not experimental, never expanding the horizon which would be trusted to these guys as well.

“Spawn of Hatred” is a good release, but somehow the band seem to have played it safe. While taking some more risks here and there it could have been a more exciting album that would really highlight their own identity. If the guys built onto what they have now and flirt with something new the next release may be the surprise of the year it will be released.
