Freedom Call – Ages Of Light

Releasedate: 29-04-2013; Label: Steamhammer / SPV
By: Martine Goffard

The band Freedom Call has decided to celebrate their 15th anniversary with the release of a 2CDs best-of, the first one in the guys’ career. No metal is happier than the one of these Germans. Forget harsh voices, darkness, violence and virility and come to the other side of the rainbow! You know that you look absolutely ridiculous when singing something that could be the soundtrack for “My Little Pony: fight for Dream Castle”. Now a perverse side of your personality genuinely enjoys it and doesn’t care. This 2CDs box is fantastic! All the best songs are on it: the new ones like Rockstars, the classic ones like Land of Light and even the little gems like Farewell and Mr. Evil. It must have been a hard choice for the band to pick them because so much more titles would deserve to be here, like Carry On or The Eternal Flame. But well, as a fan, I can’t even name a Freedom Call’s song that would actually be boring.

The first CD is the actual best-of. The songs are in a chronological order. It’s very clever because you can see the evolution. The second CD is a bit … special. They remixed classics: Rock Radio into swinging rock, Metal Invasion into a weird Irish folk and Mr. Evil in a reggae version that smells warm summer. The best one is still the song Freedom Call transformed in an acoustic, camp fire ballad. Don’t open your eyes that wide, of course it’s bad remix (except perhaps for Age of the Phoenix). It’s the point. These ones are directly directed to the fans, as a parody. Freedom Call never pretended to make serious high quality music anyway. It’s for fun, for a good laugh and a great time. All these songs are catchy anthems and will stay in your head for days; when you take a shower, when you cook, when you are stuck in the traffic jam… Relax and enjoy! “Ages of Light” is a must-have for the fans and for the others, a very good way to discover the band.
