The American singer-songwriter Josh Ritter released the sixth full-length album “The Beast in Its tracks” this year.
The album is literally bare history of one break-up. Pretty serious personal and thoughtful thing includes author’s attempts to find the other side (perhaps, bright and positive) of divorce. Since now it’s your problem too. Heartbreaks provide boldness which has genius, power and magic in it. You can lie down and cry or just write thirteen tracks about it in Americana style and with narrative lyrics. What about content of the album. It couldn’t stand on one shelf with Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Neil Young (which obviously inspired Ritter) but for cry times you need it nearby. The wide open soul sings about what could never happen and misses good lovely times. Emotions run through the notes. The combination of heartache and hope formed words. But clouds disappear and sun poorly shines in several tracks like “A certain light” or “New lover”. Track worthy to be heard is “In your arms awhile” with country motif and excellent back vocals.
Honestly, the “divorce” problem could be solved with psychologist’s help. But what’s better doctor than music. Doubt if the album will be cure for somebody.
