Darkthrone started as a Death Metal band in 1987, but by the end of it turned more into Black Metal. Through the years the band showed to be quite flexible with their sound as it is now more Heavy Metal. Quite some releases are on their name already and anno 2013 the band a new one comes out. “The Underground Resistance” is the band’s sixteenth release and it is out now.
The album comes with a raw, punk side on it. The band never really sticks with the sound of a previous release so yet you can expect a couple of surprises here and there. Yet, the band keeps not only the variance in their sound but within the release itself you will be introduced to the diversity as well. Where the first track “Dead Early” was full rage from the begin, the second track “Valkyrie” has a calmer start and has a yet more nostalgic touch to it. It must be said that the vocals have a bit of a vulnerable side here. It is brought to the very border of what could have been reached and there they stopped. A very daring choice made, but it works as it feels like a victory each time he makes it there.
What comes to mind again is that whatever the guys decide to do with their music it always has that hint of Darkthrone in it. They never seem to lose touch with themselves and that is exactly why a release number 16 is still actual and has its well-deserved spot in the musicworld. Darkthrone is Darkthrone, yet again.
