Omnium Gatherum – Beyond

Releasedate: 25-02-2013; Label: Lifeforce Records
By: Martine Goffard

The Finnish band Omnium Gatherum has released their sixth album, Beyond. To judge this album you have two choices. The first one is that you consider that Omnium Gatherum is definitely a copy of Insomnium and brings nothing to the metal scene; then you turn your back on it with disdain.

Your second choice is that you recognize Omnium Gatherum as a little brother of Insomnium and welcome this “extra” of great music with all the acclamations it deserves. Indeed, who cares if it sounds like some other band’s music if it’s brilliant? It’s still a thousand times better than new revolutionary crap. By the way, the guys are young enough to have a long career and develop a more personal sound. I just regret that they have put down the electro side they had on their previous albums.
It’s quite easy to resume Beyond in one word : “formidable”. If you enjoy death melodic, be ready to experience an hour of pure pleasure. The melodies are catchy and fascinating. It’s dynamic and full with energetic riffs. You can hear how hard they have trained to reach such a level of perfection in their performance. Many songs are composed on an intense crescendo. The breathtaking New Dynamic and White Palace are travels in an atmosphere of eternity and immensity. Nightwalkers, inspired more by Swallow the Sun’s style, is delightful half-dark doom with long keyboard solos and gothic effects. The songs taste steel and electricity. You never feel bored a single second, it’s neither repetitive nor cheesy. To conclude, Beyond is an explosion of senses and shades. No words will explain it better than a good listening, that you should do for the sake of your soul. Maybe the band is still a copy, but it’s above all grandiose!
