Sons Of Aeon – Sons Of Aeon

Releasedate: 21-01-2012; Label: Lifeforce Records
By: Martine Goffard

Sons Of Aeon is a new doom death band from Jyväskylä, Finland. Though that Sons Of Aeon is the first album of the band, the guys are professionals as we have here Pasi Pasanen, ex-drummer of Swallow The Sun, Wille Naukkarinen and Tommi Kiviniemi, guitarists of Ghost Brigade.
They offer excellent performances, a lot of rhythm – don’t await the romantic, gloomy atmosphere of Swallow The Sun – and dynamic grunts. The quality of the songs is obvious; it’s melodic, well organized with a touch of grandiloquence here and there but it lacks completely of surprise and inspiration. Sons Of Aeon brings nothing that we haven’t already heard too many times, on Insomnium or Omnium Gatherum for example. Now, it’s still an enjoyable album in itself. The intro of The Centre is lovely and melancholic. The vocals are aggressive and powerful. Every song has brilliant guitar solos and Weakness ends majestically. Still, it’s not sure that you will remember anything of Sons of Aeon an hour later. There are no catchy refrain, interludes or instrumental subtleties. This cd shows that it’s not because you are a gifted musician that you are also a talented compositor and at that level, it’s unforgivable. Jyväskylä death metal scene needs new blood and we wait impatiently for the next step in its evolution.
