Silvoid – The Ways of the Old

Releasedate: 2012
By: Sabine van Gameren

Silvoid is a Finnish formation that has been around in this line up since 2010. Musically, the guys are not so sure what they want to be labelled with, putting a question mark behind their own description of Alternative Melodic Thrash Rock. Now the band has released an EP called “The Ways of the Old”.

It is interesting to see that what the band says in their bio, the fact they don’t want to sound like something generic. In this EP we get presented three tracks which are obviously an attempt to live up to that, but are not really something new under the sun as you may have expected while reading that. A dangerous statement to make as it creates expectations and if you can’t live up to it completely people are disappointed easily. That is a bit of a shame because the band shows with this EP that the skills are there, the riffs are showing that they are not afraid to explore the options but mixed with the quite standard parts it makes that this fades away a bit. On the vocal side there could be some benefits to get as well. Here and there they are not as steady as it could be.
Large ambitions for these guys and they are working on it. Not completely there yet but obviously that might come later. The package seems there, just some refinement here and there and then we’ll hear more of them.
