Francesco Marras is a guitarist that is known for his work with the band Screaming Shadows. Now he took time to record a solo album and it is called: “Black Sheep”.
Instrumental releases always are interesting to listen to. With the main question ahead: does it keep me interested throughout? Too many of those guitarists have those ever going on whining guitar sound where no destination seem to be in mind, a careless wandering around in the collection of their musical skills. Luckily we have Francesco Marras here showing us it can be done different also. He involves different kinds of influences into his sound, but with the structure of his songs he clearly has a destination in mind, a climax to build to and that makes the album a little different than those we have had before. Not even once a guest vocalist is introduced in the music and there is no high demand for that either. Listen to title track “Black Sheep” for example, it gives you the structure that keeps building towards the end. Above all there is some variation within the track list as well.
This release is one that is also good for those non-guitarists. Those who enjoy to listen to great solo’s without getting overdosed and overwhelmed by it all. Well done!
