Horse Latitudes – Awakening

Releasedate: Februari 2012; Label: Doomentia Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Horse Latitudes is a formation from Finland that makes Sludge/Doom. The band formed in 2009 and came with a debut full length a year later. In 2012 they return with a second full length release, “Awakening” is out now.

They surely made me wonder, a deep bass coming from their sound and soon to find out there are two bassists in this band you imagine to feel that heavy sound droning through you while listening to it. As guide through their sound you find the drums leading you into it. Often quite calm, somehow basic, but then again surprising you with it. A weaker spot in Horse Latitudes are the vocals. They do not really stand out and are maybe a bit too light to make an impression. These could surely come out much better with a little more tactical placement in the music as well. What the band does know how to do well is keep you entertained. Even though the music doesn’t elaborate too much they have subtle parts in their music that makes you focus on it all. Concluding this all it seems to me that this is band that makes live a better first impression better than recorded music. Let’s hope we’ll see them on the road.
