Uniklubi – Syvään Valoon

When it comes to Finnish bands singing in Finnish this one is definitely always in the list. With their four studio albums and one “best of” compilation these five guys from nearby Tampere have been busy since they founded the band in 1999. What band I am talking about? The melodic rock band Uniklubi of course. These guys even released a photo book last year. These pictures were taken by the great Finnish photographer Jarkko Tiitinen who also took the pictures for the latest album “Syvään Valoon”.

This album does not only include songs about broken hearts and loves left behind, it also looks like it. The style is held dark and shadowy, the portraits of each band member is partially in complete shadow. But there’s also a girl dressed in all white in two pictures which resembles hope even in the darkest hour, at least for me when I look at it. But because of her torn clothes and the washed make up around the eyes you might as well take it as a fallen angel. Anyway, the cover and booklet leaves you enough room for your own interpretation. The album is slow and melodic-melancholic, deep and thoughtful. But it also contains faster songs and very danceable tunes such as “Polje”, “Mitä Vittua” or “Liian Lähellä”. “Syvä Valo” starts out quite rocking and fast but turns out to be quite slow and acoustic session like. For me the album “Syvään Valoon” sounds more emotional, serious and deeper compared to the old ones. Also does this one sound more grown, so you can see a great progress from each album to the one now. “Syvään Valoon” is a gorgeous album and I can’t wait to see it live now.
