Van Canto – Break the Silence

Releasedate: 30-09-2011; Label: Napalm Records
By: Lara Cappelli

Van Canto is a – or rather the – German a cappella metal band. They formed in 2006 and released four albums since then. “Break the Silence” is their latest, now out through Napalm Records.

When an artist is brave enough to come up with something totally new and “unique”, the risks come along with those terms. As a matter of fact, the proposal would probably drift away from conveying any feeling of indifference towards it, which most likely makes the response come down to two: either love or hate. That’s exactly the risk that Van Canto and their a cappella metal run, once again in this latest release. “Break the Silence” stays in line with the band’s style, still going a little further from that. The whole album is filled with such energy, as if the band wanted to convey its will to explode into something much bigger and powerful. From the artwork to the cover songs picked (among them, Alice Cooper’s “Bed of Nails” is the emblematic and outstanding one), the album catches the attention of the listener, that might even forget of the absence of conventional instruments. This is once again made possible by the great balance created by the members of the band, who succeed in making their voices entwine into a perfect blend of heavy, symphonic and power metal.
In their revolutionary attitude, Van Canto shows not to have lost their faith in their music, and rather keeps pushing it further to show there’s still a branch of metal which is worth giving a voice to, in all meanings of the word.
