Thulcandra – Under a Frozen Sun

Releasedate: 30-09-2011; Label: Napalm Records
By: Martine Goffard

Thulcandra is a German band founded in 2003. Their enjoyable black/death metal sound carries you to a land of snow, ice and solitude. Their first album, “Fallen Angel’s Dominion” went out in 2010. The band continues its journey on boreal ground and offers us its second album, “Under a Frozen Sun”.

We wander not far from the ice-cold atmosphere of the first album. The ambiance is gloomy and we won’t see the glimpse of a light here. It starts slowly with snatches of depressive acoustic notes soon followed by the powerful drums. In Blood and Fire gives the tempo of this album. It will be restless with some melody behind. The singer keeps the same harsh tone, leading us into his world of pain and despair. I would say that the weakest point of all this is the homogeneity of the album. It’s hard to hear a difference between the songs except for some riffs and the chorus. There is no slower, atmospheric song to give us a break. Each tune is catchy tough and if you liked the first song, you won’t feel bored by the last one. Since the guitars sound promising, you always await more of it and it’s a surprise when the album ends abruptly. There’s not much revelation in “Under a Frozen Sun” but you shouldn’t sulk this album as it will still give you a good time on this cold Silent Planet.
