Shattered Hope is a Greece metal band. The band makes Doom metal and got formed in 2002. “Absence” is their debut full length album after releasing some demo’s.
The band is bringing typical funeral doom, slow songs that last for ages. The music doesn’t really hit me in the face with deepness, a lack of variety does make the songs being a bit too long. On the vocal side there could be some more improvements, some experimenting would give the music a boost already. What got me most were the drums. These are challenging and sometimes even a bit daring, never to expect that they would go on the lead, but especially in the parts where the speed goes up they are an important element in the music.
The songs are sometimes a bit messy, changeovers between the slowest parts towards more up tempo parts are often a bit unexpected.
What is to notice is that the keyboard sometimes gets pushed away by other instruments on occasions where it would have been beautiful to have them more upfront to add a whole lot of extra drama. When the band adds extra instruments like a cello or violin, the music becomes suddenly more dramatic than ever before, this indicates that thinking what to bring upfront at what time certainly pays off.
“Absence” is one to get on the grow, later on you don’t want to have it missing in your collection.
