Label: Odin records
Releasedate: 2019
Norwegian drummer Gard Nilssen created his Acoustic Unity in 2014. He teamed up with saxophonist Andre Roligheten and bassist Petter Eldh. Anno 2019 they this new album out called “To Whom Who Buys A Record”.
The title is clear, it is dedicate to the music lover that still goes out there and lays down some cash for a physical product, a thing that becomes a bit more rare very day with streaming services on plenty availability. Listening to the album the title seems quite interesting. It gives you the impression it is recorded live, sometimes a bit hollow on the production.
The band is playing with their tensions, building it up to abruptly go elsewhere with their music, sometimes an interesting choice, sometimes a rather odd decision. Transitions are not always fluent. A matter of taste but it feels sometimes a bit disconnected with the rest. So one need to invest time to see the bigger picture.
Coming to the end of the release it becomes even more clear that you actually don’t really want to listen to this on record at all. Live perhaps, when you can feel it come alive. For that brings out the vibrance of it. It simply is not an album one listens in the background, or to relax with.
