Black Metal names like Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone, Sarke himself known of bands like Khold and Tulus and then some live musicians of Satyricon together in this group called Sarke. It started in 2008 and anno 2016 we get presented full length album number four: “Bogefod”.
The story of the album dates back 1000 years to an old vikingstory. And not only the story is old, we are told that the ‘warm sound of a 100-year-old guitar’ is part of this album. That being said, we could remark that this may probably the only warm element as the Black Metal the guys produce is ice cold. It does bring a nice surprising touch the sound of Sarke though. A little mystic around it and the factor of the unexpected make the album exciting. The band does not stick with a stereotype and brings in elements of different genres although well embraced by their own Black Metal sound it is up for a concentrated listener to undress it.
The question is, should you? Maybe not really as the album is one that flows naturally. Tempo changes are there, but they are never abrupt and brought in with care and in the slowest parts it is building that tension and are you simply waiting for that outburst to come. It is there, let that be a certainty!
“Bogefod” is a release that gives you an interesting story shaped in a Black Metal outfit. But it is more than that and yet that it is! Sarke showcase their own strong identity with this release and we are given a very pleasant album that we will spend many hours with.
