Essence is a Danish formation that got together in 2005. In Europe they have hit the stages multiple times as a support of many bigger acts. Right now they are releasing their album “Prime”.
It’s interesting, this band like to blend in a diversity of styles into their metal. “Refuse To Exists” has some Punk-like refrains. Then the guys have listened some Death Metal as well, using that as well but somehow keep that a bit shallow. Also present, a bit more obvious, is the Metallica sound in there. With these and other styles mixed into one album the band has created a diversity that keeps people listening, but did they also create a unity? Yes, in some way they did and yet not completely. Here and there it seems like they just wanted to put something there regardless whether it really fit with the rest of the music.
It appears a bit messy, but of you look at the whole product they seem to get away with it. Especially when the band has this catchy, sing-along refrains in there the band comes out at its best with a sound that you don’t hear every day, but is still very recognizable.
“Prime” is a release that is interesting for all that is in there, but maybe they could highlight the unity in the songs a bit more to make them fit better in one and the same album.
