Black Tide – Post Mortem

Releasedate: 23-08-2011; Label: Cooperative Music
By: Lara Cappelli

Black Tide is a metal band from Miami formed in 2004. Their first album, “Lights From Above”, was released in 2008 and had quite some success in the metal world. “Post Mortem” is their latest release.

When Black Tide started out, they seemed to have all they needed to become one of the biggest names in the metal scene: technique, originality and a young age that made it all livelier. Now that they’re back with this new release, those who stood so much for them, might have been little disappointed by their choices. There is a clear reference to Bullet for My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold’s music hearable throughout the album, which marks its genre and places it pretty far from being any “metal”. If we consider the young age of the band members though, blaming them because of a shift of genre doesn’t turn out to be the best of choices. After all, where some might read it as a coward option, others could rather see it as a brave step to take. Indeed, the fault of the album doesn’t stand in the genre itself but in the lack of impact of it. This time, Black Tide haven’t succeeded in delivering an album capable of standing out among the others, whatever the genre it chooses to explore. “Post Mortem” is nowhere near to the energy that characterized “Lights From Above”, which is now replaced by pretty banal music and childish lyrics, that, in the end, don’t turn out to be any relevant.
Nevertheless, of course not all of hope is gone for this band. In the past, they did show how full of potential they are. Despite “Post Mortem” doesn’t shine for originality, Black Tide are still in time to make up for it with a new and hopefully better release, whatever genre they will choose to pick then.
