Keep of Kalessin – Reptilian

Releasedate: 10-05-2010; Label: Indie Recordings
By: Sabine van Gameren

Keep of Kalessin, a Norwegian Black Metal band releases their new album “Reptilian”.

The Norwegian band got some more fame and name by trying to enter the world of Eurovision Songfestival. They didn’t came through the selection rounds, but got huge national exposure with it. The song they have send in “The Dragontower” is also featured on the album. This song is surely a bit adjusted for the Eurovision audience as it is not as aggressive and fast as their other songs. It’s a bit of a black sheep in the tracklist, but doesn’t make it one you would skip. In general the band sets a good set of riffs combined with steady drums and vocals that get into different directions as what the music demands of vocalist Thebon. Whether it are clean vocals which he brings in a catchy way or the growls, they are all well thought and good placed.
It is clear the band have spend time in thinking it all through and comparing to their previous releases this album is more epic and bombastic than ever before. Whether this has to do with the fact that they had to work with “The Dragontower” to make it more suitable for the Eurovision, or this is all a natural process that would have happened anyway is not worth to debate about. What the band has done, simply works well for them. They will surely find some new audiences with this release and they deserve it well for the risks the band took.
