Aus Schwärzester Nacht is the fourth album of the band Nachtgeschrei. Or course, they come from Germany. The medieval theme is an industry over there. The fans of other German bands like In Extremo or Saltatio Mortis will find here a continuity and appreciate the music of these competitors.
The difference is really thin considering that they all use the same traditional instruments – hurdy-gurdy, accordion, bagpipes – for the same kind of folk music. However, Nachtgeschrei is less heavy than In Extremo and insists more on the melodic, sentimental side. Still they show clearly their metal side through the firm guitar riffs. The album is very enjoyable, mixing catchy party songs like “Spieler” or “Na Sdorowje!” with delicate melodic ballads like “Unter Deinem Licht”, which starts with a flute solo. Another good point is the length of the album: 16 tracks in the digipack. You definitely get a lot for your money and the songs are varied enough so that it doesn’t seem boring or repetitive. For those who speak German, the clear lyrics make it also a good sing-along. The band will play at medieval festivals this summer. You should check their website so you don’t miss them live!
