Subraum Katzen – Träume in Dunklen Farben

Releasedate: 07-11-2008; Label: Timezone Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

The industrial/electro act Subraum Katzen from Switzerland released “Träume in Dunklen Farben” at the end of 2008.

The term industrial came much alive when seeing a robot on the cover of this album. It carries a flower in his body. The whole artwork is in black and white drawings. Dark colors, dunklen farben. This formation is a project of Frau Katzen who gives her voice to the music and Herr Subraum who takes care of guitars and programming. The vocals are sweet and made me think of L’ame immortelle for that. The music is more apart from that though. With songtitles like: “Cut Myself”, “Skinny” and “Meine Welt” they seemed to have taken their inspiration from teenage drama worlds. The music is very simple, open and approachable for an act calling themselves industrial, on a hip indie electro party they wouldn’t do bad either.

At the end of the album there has not really came a climax, a listener might have hoped for a musical explosion where it all gets a bit wilder and daring, a step away from the safe side. This music does great for a cloudy Sunday, driving a car for example. Overall it is very pleasant, but as a total Subraum Katzen could have taken some more risks to spice up the drama.
