Jorn – Spirit Black

Releasedate: 05-06-2009; Label: Frontiers Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Jorn is the solo project from Jorn Lande. Jorn was singer of Masterplan for two albums, but actually is involved in various projects. He could be heard in the latest album from Arjan Lucassen his project Ayreon. His new solo album is called: “Spirit Black” and will appear at June 5th.

First thing that jumps to mind when listening to “Spirit Black” is that even though this is classic hard rock, it is never drawn into some cliché sound. Jorn remains the typical classic rock sound while he is giving a modern twist of originality to the sound. The album starts of strong with the title song and also the songs after that come in with a steady portion of power. Just when the player reaches half way the record it steps down one grid, but soon Jorn picks up and steps up double. Jorn made the statement “I feel that some of the songs on ‘Spirit Black’ have the potential to become essential hard rock classics that will stand the test of time”, which made sound extremely self conscience , but he might be more right than you expect. Instrumentally it is a nice album, that tops many other releases that claim to be classic rock and Jorn sticks out over those like an elephant over a mouse. Also interesting to hear Jorn lande covering Tarja Turunen’s I Walk Alone. The song sounds extremely powerful with his voice and perhaps it would be interesting to see them singing this song together once.

You should consider to get your copy as soon as you can, this one will surely score a nice spot in my yearlist.
