Winterfylleth – The Threnody Of Triumph

Releasedate: 10-09-2012; Label: Candlelight Records
By: Martine Goffard

Now that the cold winds of autumn have arrived, our general mood is prepared to welcome the desperation and solitude created by Winterfylleth’s music. This album about the transitions of the soul in death could not find a better release time.

The English band, which has already a good reputation on the black metal scene, has released its third album a few weeks ago. If you are still searching for a good album to listen to by the fireplace with a good whisky in one hand, I highly recommend you “The Threnody Of Triumph”. For this album deserves a full hour of delicate attention. The compositions are outstanding. On “A Thousand Winters”, the heavy drums crush everything on their way, fast, epic, while the guitars light and high pitched wrap themselves around them like wild winds. Sometime these elements turns into a low mist, like on “Aefterield-Fréon”, the melancholic, Celtic ballad of the album. “The Swart Raven” is simply honey to the ears for anyone who finds beauty in deep artistic sadness. You can hear an Amon Amarth influence in the melodies and the male choirs, like on “The Glorious Plain”, sound extremely Scandinavian though the lyrics show that there is a real will to create British black metal here. The sorrow is particularly well expressed through the agonizing screams of the singer. “Void Of Light” takes back where “A Thousand Winters” had left it and destroys all that was still alive with an insane violence. This pompous, dark romanticism goes the distance without a glimpse of decline. With the solid rumbling of the drums as anchor, the music whirls in the darkness until it reaches the soft, touching “Home Is Behind”. This colorful, acoustic piece is the calm before the storm. The last leaves of autumn fly away on “The Threnody of Triumph”, the battle cry to winter.
