Nihill – Verdonkermaan

Releasedate: 20-08-2012; Label: Hydra Head
By: Sabine van Gameren

Nihill is bringing us Black Metal from The Netherlands. It is created by the duo Jelle Agema and Michiel Eikenaar in 2007 and this year they bring a third full length album to the market.

The album starts with fire, literally as the track is called “Vuur: The Deathwind of Resurection”. The band has a decent tempo going and the passion of the sound comes up right away. After that you come down with some time to breathe, slower moments in which the vocals are more coming upfront and you can let the instrumental part take its impact. This is also when you start to find the so called beauty of it. The macabre sound here builds the atmosphere but just when you felt somewhat familiar with it the band brings you in a calming space sound. The feeling of the unknown moments that are ahead are bringing the chills down your spine but the brute sound of the first three tracks are not returning in the last one. “Trauma: Crushing Serpens Mercuriales” is more open and seem to be more generic and open.
The album as a total is one that gives you great moments when you really climb into it. Productionwise you might feel it is bit too raw, but it somehow brings extra charm to the atmosphere so you won’t fall over it.”Verdonkermaan” hopefully sets the band in a broader light, they deserve a wider audience.
