Kalt – Der Storm

Releasedate: 20-04-2012; Label: Echozone
By: Sabine van Gameren

The German project Kalt is giving face to a typical German Gothic Rock experience. About a year ago a debut album saw light and anno 2012 a second full length album is released. “Der Storm” is out now.

Mike York, the man behind this project composed eleven tracks for this release and they quite live up to the name. A cold, sinister atmosphere hangs around these tracks . Dark vocals, screeching here and there make that the songs have their major impact. Yet, another interesting part of the sound involves the drums. They are quite upfront in the mix, while you might have thought it would be pushed back by the guitars. Definitely a plus for this release.
What is missing in the release is a bit more contrast. Where articulation in these vocals could have made it all very dynamic, it appears a bit flat sometimes. Just a minority perhaps, live you would probably get this music a bit more raw and that would suit this sound as well. Two of the tracks contain the female voice of Rachel, vocalist of Die Laughing which is a good add to it all. These two could make an ultimate gothic duet together if they would like to.
“Der Storm” as an album is one that has its specific audience. It is a good release, but some points could be perfectionized for an upcoming release.
