Ewert And The Dragon is an indie folk band coming from Tallinn, Estonia. Their first album “The Hills Behind The Hills” was highly acclaimed in Estonia and did sow some interest around. Now that their second album “Good Man Down” is released though, the band seems completely ready to make the big step out of their home country.
A small pearl of wisdom opens the album carrying a sort of optimistic sound, “(In The End) There’s Only Love” grabs already your attention with its catchy and fresh melodies. The first couple of songs stay on that line, resulting light but still well structured. As a matter of fact, what is clear from the beginning is that the band does not give the detail for granted. You can notice that by the way the same light songs are filled with, just to name a few, sporadic xylophone or clapping melodies that empower the overall flow of the songs.
As the listening goes by, the originality of the sound stays, but the matureness of the single tracks gets much stronger, revealing the other face of the band. “Panda”, a melancholic semi acoustic piece drifts into “Burning Bush”, the actual ballad of the album, and takes you to a whole new atmosphere where everything that follows gets more pondering. The drastic shift of sound is handled with a remarkable confidence, as if the music was made to challenge the listener. That’s certainly a winning formula, one that makes the album more variegated and brings the sound to a higher level; the same formula that can easily succeed in satisfying a wider audience and that, above all, shows how intriguing the band is. Ewert And The Two Dragons hit the nail on the head!
