John Sigmond is the name behind Blaudzun, the Netherlands is the country he comes from. After two years from the release of “ Seadrift Soundmachine“ the folk/pop artist is back with his third album “Heavy Flowers”, which was released in January.
There’s a bittersweet kind of feeling in the music, always coming together with a sense of purity, the same one that characterized Blaudzun previous release. This time though, it seems like this purity is conceived in a slightly different way: while it was previously faced with some naivety and shyness, it’s now handled with much more maturity, that naturally flaws into some more articulated structures. It’s there that we can get the sense of growth and self-awareness that Blaudzun shows to have acquired through the years. The overall folk sound of the songs locks on some frequently used crescendos that make the whole “Heavy Flowers” highly evocative. Also, we can’t help recognising the single songs don’t stand for themselves anymore, but rather need one another to gain the relevance the album ultimately and undeniably shows to have.
Blaudzun definitely did that again: taking his music to a higher step but still keeping its essence unchanged, he crafted a balanced release, one that this time can’t really keep us from saying he has finally gained a steady place in the folk pop scene. And a well deserved one, there’s no denying it.
