Soen is a project of Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, bassist Steve DiGiorgio ( Testament, Iced Earth), guitarist Kim PLatbarzdis and vocalist Joel Ekelöf (Willowtree). They are now releasing their album “Cognitive”.
With the names mentioned you may have some expectations and Soen is not disappointing them at all. The band makes Progressive Rock, but here and there you can sense a little Katatonia new style as well. With the vocal styles used, the excellent instrumental backing you get the shivers running down your spine as they succeed in touching you on the emotional side as well as that side of you that wants to hear instrumental beauties. Is it love at first sight, definitely not, there is much to hear and you need time to let it all come in and after a few times listening you feel yourself sinking into it more and more. A quite present bass is giving you some depth in the sound, guitars pushed back a little but in the overall sound the whole comes out as a winner.
Simply one of these releases that you know that you will keep listening. Supergroups aren’t always guaranteed of success just for the sake of the participants names being merchandised everywhere, but look beyond that as you don’t want to miss this one!
