English singer/songwriter Ed Laurie’s career started with the self release of “Meanwhile in the Park” in 2005, which got noticed by an itunes executive and got widely spread after that. Now he’s back with “Cathedral”, his third full length, which has been released last November.
Ed Laurie couldn’t have come up with a better title for his latest release. Indeed, if one had to use an image to describe the whole album, the best one would probably be a cathedral. One of those places where the atmosphere found within is sacred, hard to be broken.
The album is filled with different elements and variations in the songwriting, but the clever move was the balance among them. Ed doesn’t hasten to throw them in, but rather spread them out throughout the listening. The melancholy of a squeezebox, the drums hint, the random piano notes, the strings ornament and the ever-present guitar. They are all there to keep the repetition far enough and take the listener by surprise. Every song manages to stand by itself, but all of them are wrapped into the overall sensuality of the calm melodies. Also, the soft kind of pop proposed is made even warmer by Ed’s deep vocals.
As hard as it might be to choose the most representative part of a certain cathedral, so it is to pick the song that represents the album at its best. All of them are just irresistibly fascinating: just enter the cathedral and experience them yourself.
