Nefacio is a project born by the idea of the German artist Baba Hail. The band is deeply influenced by medieval music and history, which they try to combine together in their music. “Lauf!” is their first album.
When reading “Lauf!” information, it’s clear that you’re dealing with something diverse. A concept developed around the story of a 14th century executer entwines with some rather folkish music, which mainly comprises strong vocals, bass and drums. When it comes to the music, it definitely turns out differently though. First of all, the story is told is German, which doesn’t make it clear at all. Or well, it would be, if only the music had a more overriding role to guide the listener through the story and create at least the atmosphere of it. The trouble here is that after few songs it gets clear that the whole album is not about music. Music turns out to be just the background of the story, which is mainly told by some acting parts and sporadic singing ones.
What Nefacio tries to deliver is doubtlessly interesting; also, the album boasts some really interesting guest artists, like Brodensk from Subway To Sally and Der Morgenstern from In Extremo. The fault of theirs is to have kept it too narrow, which has brought the band to get lost in the formula they created themselves. For those who are not German speakers, it might turn out really hard to understand the point of this release at all. On the other hand, German speakers have probably more chances to enjoy it. However, Nefacio should maybe consider better developing their ideas to make their music slightly more accessible.
