Hateskor – Paint my Fear

Releasedate: 18-11-2011; Label: Noiseheads Records
By: Martine Goffard

Hateskor is a brand new band from Spain, created last year. We have the pleasure here to review their first album, “Paint My Fear”. Among the band members we have Ismael Filthó, who is the new keyboard player in the Spanish power metal band Cuatro Gatos. The singer, Juan Ignacio Solano (here, under the name of McLeod), sings in Egraine, another melodic/power metal band.

Hateskor describe themselves as melodic death metal. Except the voice, which sounds like correct death grunts, the rest is a lot more melodic than death. It could even be called power metal at some point, which is not surprising if we consider the career of the band members. It reminds me a bit of the first Nighwish’s albums, the wild solo guitars, the melodious keyboard.
The music is clearly joyful. They play fast, without a break, to the last song. It’s catchy. One thing is sure, these musicians are all talented! A special mention for the solos. In fact, it’s the solos that save the songs, for the whole album is a great mess. Sometime, it’s like if each one was trying to play over the others, sometime you just barely hear the difference between the songs. I don’t know if they wanted to show all they are capable of in one shot, but it’s too much at once. The different phases in the songs don’t stand out. Except perhaps on The Curse and Where they Belong. The ending of this last one is perfect !

I take note it’s a first album. Musically, it sounds very promising. I just hope they will work on their compositions until next time. They can give us something brilliant!
