Crimfall is a Finnish Folk Metal band that formed in 2007. The band released their debut album in 2009 and is now back with a second release “The Writ Of Sword”.
Last year the band made a good impression when they played at the Tuska afterparty show. It was quite clear that the band has quite a following. “The Writ of Sword” comes with quite some expectations. The band have two powerful vocalists. Femme Helena reminds me slightly to Tanya Kemppainen, vocalist of Soulgrind. She matches quite well with Mikko Häkkinen, who takes the male vocals. The instrumentals are often bombastic and with the use of diverse instruments they often create a different edge to their sound. This creates a lot of contrast in their sounds. They have aggressive parts, cold and deep, but on the other side the band brings also melodic parts with the bright sound of Helena Haaparanta on the lead. But besides these vocals there is also a great part for drummer Janne Jukarainen which puts himself quite dominant in the sound. A great addition for the band.
Fans of bands like Turisas, Finntroll and Soulgrind are highly advised to try this album. Many bands like them have tried, but only few come to the level that Crimfall shows with this release.
