Swallow The Sun – Moonflowers

MeloDeath/Doom formation Swallow The Sun is back witha brand new album. “Moonflowers” is out and it is the eight full length studio release in more than 20 years of existence of the Finnish band.

Looking back at all the releases the band has done they never disappoint us. Surely, some jumped out a bit more than others and if you wonder if the band can remain the surprise than “Moonflowers” may be exactly what you are looking for. It is maybe a bit more diverse than you are used to from this band. “Woven Into Sorro” has a dark and sinister touch while album opener “Moonflowers Bloom in Misery” is much more gloomy. “All Hallows’ Grieve” is calm and mellow, vocals of Cammie Gilbert (Oceans of Slumber) are giving the song a lot of extra. Seems like the perfect voice for this song, a good match.

When listening to “The Void” I had a bit of British Goth vibes coming my way, not too obvious but certainly made me smile to hear that combined with Swallow The Sun”.
Have you invested in a deluxe edition of this release you get the album twice, with the second part being “classical” editions and it goes beyond how listening to these makes the songs come alive even more. You are simply a thief of yourself, brutally withholding you the joy of listening to these. Sounds overly dramatic, but really, consider getting this one for a few bucks extra.

Concluding I must say that “Moonflowers” surprised me. After seeing the band around for so many years I almost worried that this album would be simply another one in line but the band proves they are not just cloning their music time after time and gave us more than we anticipated for. A nice, positive surprise.
