Darkblack – Midnight Wraith

Releasedate: 01-12-2010; Label: Stormspell Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

Darkblack is a band from USA. The Power Metal formation got together in 2004 and after the release of their debut album last year, it is now time for the release of an EP called “Midnight Wraith”.

Darkblack may have been formed in 2004 but their sound comes from way further back. Take that as literally as it is, it is to be said: old fashioned. Of course a crappy production of this EP might have to do with this as well, but the main thing is the fact that the instruments seem to be quite simple and taken from the past. The quality lets you down to the level that you might think it is a lost demo of a local band which tried hard at that time, but never got to the point of putting some of their selves into the music. This counts for either musicianship as the songwriting. Of course you can keep on dreaming that this will happen on some day, but listening this release, it might take a while. Perhaps some of the purists, the die-hard collectors, might bother to give it a try, but this release will never be that album you listen often. Even for old school lovers, there is better material out there.
