Alan Simon – Excalibur IV: The Dark Age of the Dragon
Alan Simon is a man that has quite some work on his name and more is yet to come. This time it is the release of the rock opera called: “Excalibur IV: The Dark Age of the Dragon” that sees light.
Musically you will find quite a diversity on influences. Besides Rock you see yourself drifting towards Prog as well as Folk and whatever else flows in. This story is one that takes its time, and quite some names have been part of the production as well. These names are surely adding to the variety and are making the whole dynamic. Regardless there are many different people to join in the whole is knitted together tightly. It suits. The orchestra is making it even more alive.
The whole sound of this release is quite full. Even in the instrumental parts you hear much detail and you will enjoy listening it several times to hear something new each time the album is spinning. Yet, they never go too bombastic. It is kept under control and not overly wild.
The story self is easy to listen to. And if wizards and dragons are your thing, sure this one will interest you. Quality-wise one of the better rock opera’s. It is part IV. But it could also be listened as a story on its own. Surely recommended.
