Unheilig (German for “Unholy”) is a German Neue Deutsche Härte band. The band was formed in 1999 and now consists of principally Der Graf (German for “The Count”), with his live musicians Licky, Henning Verlage and Potti. Unheilig has a huge fan base in Germany, not only in the Gothic scene. Their songs are also played on TV as well as live performances on TV in the wedding planner TV series. This is their seventh studio album “Grosse Freiheit”.
The album begins rocking, strong and fast. It definitely gets you going along. The singer’s voice is low and goes deep. The second part of the album is slower and more thoughtful. All songs are about love and sung in German. Thoughtful and touchy with classic sounds such as piano or orchestra the songs are completed to go straight to your heart. Positive and passionate “Der Graf” sings about love and a loved one. Songs, that make every female sigh and wish for a sweetheart like that. The faster songs have strong guitars and drums, catchy and thriving they make you move along. When listening to it you understand why this gothic music is also played on TV. Its mainstream sound makes it very suitable for regular radio and TV. But even though it sounds mainstream there is nothing like Unheilig, a one of a kind band sounding brilliant and perfect, fitting in more than one genre. All lyrics are in the booklet. The album cover s a ship held in black and red with the night sky in the background. “Grosse Freiheit” is an amazing album that definitely gets stuck in your head in no time and makes you go along, sigh along and wish for more. Enjoy.
