Releasedate: 22-01-2010; Label: Cyclone Empire
By: Sabine van Gameren
Progressive metal band Autumn Hour started in 2008. Their debut album “Dethroned” got released on 22 January 2010 via Cyclone Empire.
The band may be up for their debut, the band members are not new in the music business. Vocalist Alan Tecchio has been known from bands like Hades, Watchtower and Non-Fiction. His contribution to “Dethroned” are calm vocals, sometimes attempting to be a pop-rock singer as it is easy going and dramatic. “How Were We Supposed To Know?” for example, is a song that besides the dramatic lyrics also have a very mellow instrumental backing. In other songs the instruments get more to the metal side yet never gets really close to the Thrash that got mentioned in the info sheet as well. Don’t expect an album with loads of brilliant riffs. In some songs it is exactly that calmness that makes it work, but in this European release there are 14 songs and at some point it becomes a bit too much of the same.
“Dethroned” is an album that knows pretty moments, pretty parts. But also knows many clichés when it comes to emotions. The clichés that made people step away from pop music. When hearing this back in a metal band this can very disappointing for a metal fan. Nevertheless the band should do great as a crossover over those who have a wide taste in music.
