It has been always hard for me to decide whether gothic metal is good in general. But this time, I have couple things that is needed to be mentioned about Sirenia‘s new album Dim Days of Dolor.

Sirenia is a Gothic metal/rock band from Stavanger, Norway. After Morten Veland‘s former band Tristania, Sirenia was formed in January 2011. And with Sirenia, Morten Veland’s intention was to take his music to the next level. So far, Sirenia has 7 albums which received great worldwide reviews.

Dim Days of Dolor takes the listener to almost an hour long journey through the gothic world’s gates. In general, I can say that it is a well-done album. Album shows a good way of harmonising the elements of Gothic metal and classical orchestrations for example with the support of melancholic violins. However, even though it is a good way of harmonising some elements, I cannot stop thinking that what unique about this album is.

To be honest, I was always sceptical about gothic metal bands because I was not able to see any big difference among them. At first, I got excited with Sirenia that their last album might change my opinion. But, it did not quite work. Personally I was hoping for some difference which I could not find in this album also. However, it is true that I really like the way that they use different style of vocals and elements of metal music. So far, from the album, my favorite songs are “Ashes to Ashes” and “Dim Days of Dolor”. I think these two songs have different energy and I wish I could feel the same energy and connection with the other songs.

One last comment about “Dim Days of Dolor” could be that compared to many other gothic metal albums, Sirenia can be counted among the very successful ones that it is worth for your time to listen it!
