Ivan Waters has an Australian background but currently is to be found in Amsterdam. He started working on an album and “Out of Control” is out now.
Due to the way of recording of this release the album is supposingly giving us a good image of what to expect from a live performance, which is something that comes to notice right into the first songs, a live act this would be.
Yet, the whole is kept a bit jazzy in its minimalistic way. Luckily some warm arrangements have been made supporting the feeling that Ivan is creating with his songs. Most of the charm is in the lyrics that have something to tell you. Sometimes a bit cliché but often something that people can identify themselves with. However this is also a bit of a trap for Ivan, it often brings a thought of ‘where have I heard it before…’ and that is a pity. I wouldn’t be sure if I remember him long after listening to the release, it doesn’t have enough of an unique identity.
Ivan Waters has pleasant voice and he knows well what he wants to bring but it is not an album that will be pulled out of a stash first for some Sunday afternoon listening and that is something that could be worked on for a next release.
